PROBLEM

As fake news is rising in the world and it can influence the people by changing their minds and sometimes spreading hatred to achieve the goals. The problem was to reduce the Fake News from society using a design challenge process. To do this task, the class of 60 students were divided into 12 teams and we were given six weeks of time to come up with some solution.

Solution

To accomplish our goal, we first listed the questions for the interview and tried to run some mock interviews to find out the appropriate questions for our interview process. Once we shortlisted 10-12 questions, we started semi-structural interviews. Based on the answers from the participants, we created "Affinity diagram" to identify personas. At the end of this process, we finalized seven personas which are Source Awareness, Feelings, Positive Sharerers, Negative Sharerers, Validators, The Concerned, and Analyzer. Further, we divided them into two categories: 1) Needs 2) Insights

As soon as we got our personas, we came up with our Actionable Problem Statement: "How might we address concerns of people who wish to be aware of the source and validate their news so that they don't feel deceived?”

By keeping this in the focus, we designed three prototypes:

  • Visual Assist: This feature will help the user to identify fake news by changing the colour of the news they are reading when they press the "analyze" button. Meaning that, if the news is fake it will be highlighted in the Red colour and if it is true then it will be highlighted with the Green colour.

  • Capture Tool: This tool will help you to verify the fake news by various options such as image, voice and search. One can simply use the camera or the microphone of the smartphone to verify the news they are reading and the system with run the factual computation and get back with the result.

  • Credibility System: This system will be rating based system where top credible companies will provide ratings to the published news and based on the ratings, the piece of news will be identified as fake or true news.

By testing these prototypes, we summed up that people liked some features from different prototype designs. The common observation was to use the colour feature along with capture and search facility. At the end of the six week, the professor called three experts from industry to evaluate our final prototype. We presented our final prototype to industry experts in the pitching session. They really appreciate our process of working and the design of the prototype as it satisfies the user needs with minimal cost.

This way we followed the each phase of design challenge process and completed the challenge by providing solution to reduce the fake news in society in six weeks with the help of Rapid Prototyping.
